Chapter Twenty-Eight

ART

“What are you doing with me?” Zara demands.

I don’t answer. I can’t talk to her. I can’t even look at her. I don’t want to see those warm brown eyes looking back at me and be suckered into remembering other times I looked into her eyes and what they meant to me.

Also, I have no idea how fae magic works. I don’t know what she’d have to do to work some kind of enchantment on me. Do the iron cuffs prevent it? Or are they just hurting her, but not actually preventing her from enchanting us?

These questions are why we need to keep her alive, and it’s completely legitimate. It’s definitely nothing to do with the fact that my whole body felt like it was cramping up at the thought of killing her.

Chan’s the one who answers her question. His voice is tight and higher pitched than it normally is, and, fuck, I can tell how fucking upset he is by all this. Chan is usually the calmest of all of us. If he’s this affected by finding out what Zara is…

“You’re going to be locked up,” he says.

“Locked up where?”

“Does that matter?”

“Chan,” she says, her voice breaking. “I never meant any of you any harm. You have to know that.”

“This is a trick,” I say. “Don’t fall for it, Chan.”

“It’s not a trick!” she says. “I’m in iron chains, Art. I can’t do anything to you. I might as well be human.”

“We don’t have any reason to think you’d be telling us the truth about that,” I say.

“I’ve never lied to you. Not once. Not about anything.”

“What about when you told us you used to belong to a wolf pack?” Elliot demands.

She sighs. “You assumed. I didn’t correct you.”

“Well, that’s a lie by omission.”

“Elliot, stop,” I say. “We’re not having a discussion about this. We’re taking her to the cage, and that’s it.”

“The cage?” Zara repeats. “What the hell is the cage?”

I don’t answer that. The others don’t either.

The cage is on the border of Shifter Town, kept there because no one wants to have to walk by something like that and look at it all the time. It was built decades ago, before I was born, after a fae invader was found in Shifter Town. He was killed, apparently, but the others decided they needed to establish defenses in case something like that happened again. And those defenses needed to be made of iron.

That’s why we have the iron chains that are currently wrapped around Zara’s wrists. And that’s why we have this cage with iron bars and an iron floor. No fae could ever hope to break out of it.

She pulls back when she sees it. “You can’t put me in there,” she says. For the first time, there’s panic in her voice.

“Do you want us to take you back to Aidan instead?” I ask. “Because he’ll kill you. This was the only other option.”

“That cage will kill me!” she says. “Look at my arms, Art!”

Against my better judgment, I do.
